I believe in a middle ground. Everything you do is ultimately a choice you take, even if heavily influenced at extreme levels. But it is you (me) that decide to act upon something or pick a side. However what we experience is not the full picture. It is not actually "I" that does everything, because I am just a node of myself, a cell of myself, but I can observe and have an input on the general direction of my whole. I have senses to observe, and my own little brain to do some local analysis, and I can relay my observations, thoughts, or emotions to the brain. Whether the brain decides to take my input into account depends on how important I'm considered. Certainly important or temporary enough to not be removed imidiately, but maybe not considered a smart source, or maybe considered smart and trustworthy. The input of all the cells are relayed to the brain and it takes a choice. The perception layer (the cells) observe and draw what they see. They say, "this is a red box". They send all those concepts to the brain (the logic using symbols). The brain gathers all the concepts in an interface that allows him to view everything at a glance and do actions, like selections. All the cells are affected by this decision since we are part of the whole. If the whole goes to a good place, we might feel pleasure. Maybe some cells feel more pleasure. However the cells are still "I".
So yeah, we always do the actions, but if you or me are a cell that has not much weight on decisions, you might see things happening in ways you didn't intend or expect. You might feel you don't have control, betrayed by yourself. This is because you didn't have enough voting power on this particular situation. And this might be for my or your own good. Or this might be a bad configuration where we are not valued correctly.
I think knowing this can lead to some ease, as you can neutralize the thoughts of frustration regarding how things develop. The body (the whole) is you and you always decide but sometimes you dind't have input on the decision, something you can do is accept that. Is it better to be a cell with the responsibility of decision or a cell riding along? Maybe some cells are tagged as having expertise on certain situations, so your input might still be heavily weighted sometimes.
